As the chief academic officer of Western Connecticut State University, the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs oversees the university’s academic mission, guiding its schools, programs, and initiatives.  In collaboration with the President, the Provost sets academic priorities and works with deans and faculty to ensure a dynamic, effective, and innovative learning environment. Position Summary: Reporting to the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs provides supervision and leadership in the development and implementation of data-driven policies and procedures governing the planning, approval process, and accreditation of academic programs.  Supports oversight of academic support services for students and university wide programs.  This position may supervise professional and support staff.

The following examples of duties illustrate the general range of tasks assigned to the position but are not intended to define the limits of required duties. Other essential duties may be assigned consistent with the general scope of the position.
  • Assists the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs with matters of curriculum, assessment, and accreditation, including general education, undergraduate majors and maintains oversight of the Office of Graduate Studies.
  • Oversees Academic administrative matters related to faculty and student supports relaying final decision making to the Provost including Honors program, Tutoring Center, Advising Center, Pre-Collegiate and Access programs, FYE Faculty liaison, Writing Center and Career Success Center.
  • Establishes and monitors metrics for all academic activities related to retention, student success, and program assessment.
  • Develops data-driven policy and program recommendations for the Provost & VPAA.
  • Provides administrative oversight of national and regional accreditation as well as system level Academic Program Review
  • Manages and develops academic partnerships with high schools for dual and concurrent enrollment, community colleges, and other community partners, including supervision of personnel where applicable.
  • Works with the Grants Office to assist in identifying and developing proposals for funding that will assist departments, the division, and the University to fulfill the academic mission.
  • Serves as the Provost’s representative on appropriate University committees and the Provost’s designee in their absence.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basic level of responsibility of the position.
Qualifications:  Incumbent must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and students. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.). Incumbent is required to have demonstrated advanced knowledge and abilities in the following:
  • Doctoral Degree.
  • Seven (7) years of administrative experience in academic affairs.
  • Demonstrated ability in academic program development, review, and approval.
  • Demonstrated experience with higher education accreditation processes.
  • Demonstrated expertise in quantitative and qualitative data-driven decision-making.
  • Experience leading or overseeing academic student support centers.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Adept at quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
  • Familiarity with Banner reporting functions.
Work Environment: Incumbent typically perform their work in offices. Periodic evening/weekend commitments for meetings and university events required.  Some travel may be required for system, state or professional meetings. The work involves extensive use of personal computers, but does not, normally, involve any significant physical effort. Salary & Benefits: The hiring salary range is $140,781 - $175,901 and is commensurate upon candidates' experience. WCSU offers a comprehensive benefits package.
